Below is a post currently running on the OTBL blog site. It's a review of the most recent NR School District Long Range Planning committee. If anyone was at the meeting, I would be interesting to hear your view on it.

Leadership?

“Our classrooms are over crowded and our school buildings are inadequate.”
This is the profound “consensus” statement the Long Range Planning Group is coming up with.
Forcing the results a bit perhaps? No analysis is being done on this. Rather, just jumping to conclusions and turning an opinion into a “fact”.
How many classrooms have a teacher’s aide? Does this have impact on the teaching atmosphere to provide greater personal attention to each student? We assume it does. Is the more appropriate question then not class size, but rather the teacher/teacher aide to student ratio?
Also, regarding class size, wasn’t one of the first things AT$&R did was to lower the “standard” classroom size the District considers? Sounds like a little moving the goal posts. If only Ryan Longwell could do the same.
The “facilitator” was in rare form last night as well. Scott Needham, former School Board member, threatened to go home and quit the group if members raised questions about the lack of diversity of opinion in the make up of the group and the legitimacy of its work. What an impressive display of leadership. But we probably see kids on the playground do the same thing by threaten to take their marbles home too.
Creating less confidence and demonstrating poor judgment. Won't pass many referendums with this strategy.
